Whether they celebrate fine dining, street food, or an ingredient, the world’s greatest food festivals are opportunities to combine your love of epicurean delights and travelling to exciting places. Any number of festivals takes place every year and many of them are worth visiting, so deciding where to go can be a bit of a tough choice.
We have whittled down the massive selection to a handful of options that we believe reflects the diversity of the food festival scene. Our selection is not exhaustive, and we encourage you to keep exploring the scene for more travel ideas.
Salon du Chocolat, Paris
Every October and November, the air in Paris’ 15th arrondissement grows heavy with the aroma of chocolate. Not really. It still smells like the disappointingly dirty French capital outside, but enter the Porte de Versailles, and you will be swept up into the glory that is Salon du Chocolat.
The five-day food festival attracts chefs, chocolatiers, sweet-makers, and visitors from around the world. Every day sees a plethora of demonstrations, talks, tasting events, family activities, workshops, and more.
The Cayman Cookout, Grand Cayman
If you are passionate about gastronomy, you do not want to miss the Cayman Cookout. Held on Grand Cayman every January, the festival is hosted by New York City-based chef Eric Ripert of the acclaimed Le Bernardin.
Friends and fellow chefs José Andrés, Daniel Boulud, and Emeril Lagasse usually join Ripert. In addition to food and wine tasting events, the festival also features cooking demonstrations, mixology demonstrations, short cruises, and more. Like horse racing betting, the festival offers all sorts of exciting and rewarding opportunities.
National Street Food Festival, New Delhi
Street food varies widely from place to place. What most of it has in common is that it is tasty, filling, and cheap. You can worry about nutritional value later, although you might be surprised at how healthy some dishes are.
The best place to discover an incredible array of them, at least in incredible India, is at the National Street Food Festival in New Delhi. Held in the capital’s Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium, the festival will tantalise your taste buds with hot, sweet, spicy, savoury, tangy, and other flavours.
New Orleans Wine & Food Experience, New Orleans
Art, music, and amazing dining intersect at the annual New Orleans Wine & Food Experience. Hundreds of restaurants and wineries, as well as top chefs and various experts on food and beverages participate in the event that attracts thousands of visitors.
Tastings, tournaments, labs, and other experiences are available. You can attend presentations and demonstrations, enjoy dinner theatre, and much more, all in picturesque New Orleans.
Food Zurich, Zurich
A relative newcomer to the food festival scene, Food Zurich takes place every May. The festival offers you chances to sample the wares of local markets and to feast on traditional cuisine. You even can enjoy the efforts of gourmet chefs.
What’s more, the festival also boasts films for foodies, sommelier competitions, a chocolate safari, kitchen battles, and workshops such as mixing herbs and making sausages.
